| In "Crescent Moon", the porcelain
disc becomes a canvas for painting with metallic oxide slips.
This time consuming process involves the use of standard brushes
and an air brush, a great deal of masking and careful cleaning
of over spray for the slips are applied on bone dry clay.
After a bisque firing, a special 24 hour glaze firing ensues.
The kiln door is opened at 2300F to induce a quick cool
preventing the development of calcium borate crystals that would
inhibit a clear glaze from forming. The kiln door is
closed again at 1500F facilitating a slow cool for the remainder
of the firing. The resulting colors are sharp, clear and
beautiful. |
